Sheep hunting is a
patience
game that pays off for the persistent hunter. It really gets
in your
blood! I've been hooked for a quarter century, and am a
founding
member of the Montana Chapter of Foundation for North American Wild
Sheep.
I spend a lot of time during the winter and spring glassing sheep herds
around the state.
Don't overlook the
unlimited permit areas. Elevation
ranges from 8,500 to 10,000 feet, "the top of the world". Our
rams
are heavy-horned, and well broomed back. Read my chapter in
Duncan
Gilchrist's latest book, Volume III Montana Land of Giant Rams.
I also guide sheep hunters in several
of the limited entry districts in the state. Each of these
districts
has something unique about it, whether it's climate, geography, or
geology.
The odds of drawing in the limited entry districts are slim, and they
are
on a rotation system for non-residents. The chances of a
permitee
harvesting a trophy ram are excellent in these districts.
Call me
to find out the districts non-residents can apply for this
year.
Sheep hunts run in ten-day periods between early September and
mid-November,
depending on the district.
